May 24, 2018. The airport officially ceased all flight operations on this date, with the last flight being a Susi Air departure. Operations were transferred to the new Aji Pangeran Tumenggung (APT) Pranoto International Airport the following day.
The airport was closed and replaced due to a combination of critical factors related to safety, capacity, and urban development. The primary reasons were:
1. **Unsafe Location:** It was situated in the heart of a densely populated city, with buildings and hills close to the flight path, posing a significant safety risk.
2. **Short Runway:** The runway was approximately 1,160 meters (3,806 feet) long, which was too short to accommodate larger, more common jet aircraft like the Boeing 737. This severely limited the airport's capacity and the region's connectivity.
3. **Inability to Expand:** Due to its urban location, expanding the runway or terminal facilities to meet growing demand was impossible.
4. **Replacement by a Modern Facility:** The opening of the new, larger, and safer Aji Pangeran Tumenggung (APT) Pranoto International Airport (ICAO: WALL, IATA: AAP), located outside the city, rendered Temindung obsolete.
The airport site is no longer used for aviation. After its closure, the land and assets were transferred from the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation to the Provincial Government of East Kalimantan. The runway, taxiways, and some terminal buildings remain physically intact but are inactive. The site is in the process of being repurposed and has been used intermittently for local events, including car shows, drag racing on the runway, and culinary festivals. The official long-term plan is to redevelop the area into a multi-use public space, including a culinary center, sports facilities, and a public green space (Ruang Terbuka Hijau).
Opened in 1974, Temindung Airport (former IATA: SRI, ICAO: WALS) was the primary air gateway to Samarinda, the capital of East Kalimantan, for over 40 years. It was a vital hub for 'pioneer' flights (penerbangan perintis), which connected the provincial capital to remote inland communities in Kalimantan that were otherwise difficult to access. The airport exclusively handled smaller turboprop aircraft due to its short runway. Operations included scheduled passenger services from airlines like Kalstar Aviation, Susi Air, and Wings Air, primarily using aircraft such as the ATR 72, ATR 42, and de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter. It was notoriously challenging for pilots and well-known among passengers for its difficult approach over the city.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening Temindung Airport for any form of aviation. The fundamental safety and operational limitations that led to its closure are permanent and cannot be mitigated. Its function has been entirely and permanently replaced by the modern APT Pranoto International Airport. All future development for the site is focused on non-aviation, urban redevelopment projects.
