The airfield ceased operations gradually following the political changes in Hungary in 1989. While an exact official closure date is not documented, all aviation activities had stopped by the late 1990s or early 2000s. By the mid-2000s, the site was confirmed to be fully defunct.
The closure was primarily due to economic and political reasons. The airfield was operated and subsidized by the MHSZ (Magyar Honvédelmi Szövetség - Hungarian Defence Association), a state-sponsored paramilitary sports organization during the socialist era. After the end of communism in 1989, the MHSZ was dissolved, which eliminated the airfield's main source of funding, equipment, and organizational structure. The local flying club was unable to sustain the high operational costs independently, leading to the cessation of activities and the eventual return of the land to other uses.
The site of the former airfield has been entirely repurposed. The land that once housed the grass runway is now fully converted into agricultural fields and is actively farmed. Furthermore, a large solar power plant (Naperőmű) has been constructed on the western part of the former airfield's territory. There are no visible remnants of aviation infrastructure like hangars, a clubhouse, or runway markers. The faint outline of the north-south runway can still be discerned in historical satellite imagery but is no longer visible on the ground.
Balassagyarmat Airfield was a typical general aviation and sport flying airfield of its time in Hungary. Its main purpose was to support the activities of the local MHSZ club. Operations primarily consisted of gliding (sailplane) and light sport aircraft flights. These activities served both as a recreational sport for the community and as a form of pre-military training for youth, a common function of MHSZ-run facilities. It was a simple grass airstrip and never handled commercial, scheduled, or heavy military traffic.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Balassagyarmat Airfield. The land has been fundamentally altered by its conversion to agricultural use and the construction of the solar farm. These developments make any future return to aviation activities physically and economically unfeasible.
