The airfield ceased active operations in the early 1990s, likely between 1990 and 1992, following the end of the socialist era in Hungary. While it became defunct at that time, it was officially and formally removed from the national registry of aerodromes much later, around 2010-2012.
The closure was primarily due to economic and political reasons. The airfield was operated by the MHSZ (Magyar Honvédelmi Szövetség - Hungarian Defence Association), a state-funded paramilitary sports organization responsible for pre-military training and sport aviation. With the political transition in 1989-1990, the MHSZ was dissolved, and its central funding model collapsed. The local flying club was unable to independently finance the maintenance and operational costs of the airfield, leading to its abandonment.
The site of the former airfield has been entirely converted back to agricultural land. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows that the former grass runways and any associated infrastructure have been completely removed and plowed over. The area is now an active farm field, indistinguishable from the surrounding agricultural landscape. There are no visible remnants of hangars, buildings, or runways.
Érsekcsanád Airfield was a typical general aviation and sport flying field of its time, serving the Baja-Érsekcsanád region. Its primary function was to support the activities of the local MHSZ club. Operations centered on flight training and recreational flying, particularly gliding (using winch or aero-tow launches) and light sport aircraft. It was a hub for training young pilots and glider enthusiasts, utilizing common Eastern Bloc aircraft of the era, such as Góbé R-26 gliders and Zlin or Antonov tow planes. It played a significant role in the local aviation community by providing accessible flight training.
There are no known or credible plans to reopen the Érsekcsanád Airfield. The land is now privately owned and used for agriculture. The cost of reacquiring the land, clearing it, and rebuilding the necessary aviation infrastructure would be substantial. Furthermore, the region's general aviation needs are met by other nearby airfields (e.g., Baja-Bácsbokod Airport, LHBC), making the revival of this specific site economically unfeasible and highly improbable.
