Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Early 2000s, approximately 2001-2002. The airfield ceased operations to facilitate the sale and redevelopment of the land.

Reason for Closure

The primary reason for the closure was economic and urban development. The city of Miskolc sold the valuable land, located in a prime area south of the city center, for commercial redevelopment. This was part of a plan to relocate aviation activities to a new, more modern airport (Miskolc Airport, LHMC) built further away from the city's residential areas. The old grass airfield was also limited in its capabilities and could not be expanded to meet modern aviation standards.

Current Status

The site of the former airfield has been completely redeveloped and is unrecognizable as an aviation facility. The land is now occupied by the Miskolc-Déli Kereskedelmi Park (Miskolc South Commercial Park). Major structures on the site include an Auchan hypermarket, a Decathlon sports store, a JYSK, and numerous other retail outlets, warehouses, and light industrial buildings. The road network for the commercial park now crisscrosses the area where the grass runways once were.

Historical Significance

Established in 1931, the Miskolc Airfield was a significant center for general and sport aviation in northeastern Hungary for 70 years. Its primary operations included:
- **Sport Flying:** It was the long-time home of the Miskolc Aero Club (Miskolci Aeroklub) and a major hub for gliding, powered sport flight, and parachuting. It played a crucial role in training pilots and fostering aviation culture in the region.
- **General Aviation:** The airfield served private aircraft and provided a base for various light aviation activities.
- **Agricultural Aviation:** It was used as a base for crop-dusting and other agricultural flights serving the surrounding farmlands.
- **Airshows and Events:** The airfield hosted numerous airshows and public events over the decades, making it a well-known local landmark.
While primarily a civilian airfield, it saw some limited military use, particularly during World War II. For most of its existence, however, it was the heart of Miskolc's civilian aviation community.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero prospects for reopening the Miskolc Airfield (HU-0075) at its original location. The land has been permanently and extensively redeveloped for commercial use, making a return to aviation activities physically impossible.

It is important to note that any discussions regarding the 'reopening of Miskolc's airport' refer to the newer facility, Miskolc Airport (IATA: MCQ, ICAO: LHMC), which was built to replace this closed airfield. The new airport has struggled to attract scheduled commercial traffic and currently operates primarily for general aviation, but it remains the focus of any future aviation development plans for the city.
