Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately in the early to mid-1990s. An exact date is not documented, as the airfield likely fell into disuse gradually following the political and economic changes in Hungary.

Reason for Closure

The closure was a direct result of the economic and structural changes in Hungarian agriculture after the end of the socialist era in 1989. The airfield was an agricultural airstrip serving state-run farming cooperatives (Termelőszövetkezet, or TSz). With the dissolution and privatization of these large-scale cooperatives, the dense network of local agricultural airstrips became economically unviable and was abandoned.

Current Status

The site is completely decommissioned and has reverted to agricultural land use. Recent satellite imagery shows that the area of the former grass runway is now actively plowed and cultivated as part of the surrounding fields. The faint outline of the airstrip is still discernible from the air, but no physical infrastructure such as hangars, service buildings, or runway markings remains.

Historical Significance

Aranyos was a typical agricultural airfield ('mezőgazdasági repülőtér') and was part of a vast, nationwide network crucial for Hungary's socialist agricultural model. Its operations were almost exclusively dedicated to agricultural aviation, including crop dusting, fertilizing, and seeding for the surrounding farms. These operations were typically carried out by the state-owned Agricultural Aviation Service (MÉM Repülőgépes Szolgálat) using iconic and robust aircraft such as the Antonov An-2 and the Zlín Z-37 Čmelák. Its significance was not strategic or military, but purely functional and vital for the local agricultural economy of its time.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known plans, discussions, or prospects for reopening the Aranyos airfield. The original purpose for its existence is obsolete, and there is no apparent demand for general or commercial aviation at this specific location that would justify the significant investment required to restore the runway and construct new facilities.
