The airfield ceased regular, official operations during the 1990s and was formally designated as permanently closed by the early 2000s. An exact date is not well-documented, but its closure is directly linked to the period of economic transition in Hungary after 1989.
The closure was for economic reasons. The airfield's primary purpose was to serve as a base for the state-owned agricultural aviation service, MÉM Repülőgépes Szolgálat. Following the end of the socialist era in Hungary, this state enterprise was downsized and eventually dissolved. Without its main operator and the associated state funding, the airfield became financially unviable and fell into disuse.
The site is currently closed and the land is privately owned. Satellite imagery shows that the grass runway (approximately 700 meters long) remains clearly visible and distinct from the surrounding active farmland, suggesting it is either mowed or the land has not been fully reclaimed for cultivation. The few small buildings on the southern end of the property, likely former hangars or administrative offices, appear to be in a state of disrepair or are used for private storage. The airfield is not used for any official aviation activities.
Tokorcs Airfield, which operated under the official ICAO code LHTO, was a key operational base for agricultural aviation in Western Hungary. From the 1960s through the 1980s, it was vital for the region's large-scale farming, supporting the extensive agricultural lands of Vas County. Operations primarily consisted of crop dusting, aerial seeding, and fertilization. The fleet typically included robust aircraft designed for such tasks, like the Antonov An-2, PZL-101 Gawron, and later the PZL-106 Kruk. The airfield was an important piece of infrastructure for the centrally-planned agricultural economy of the era.
There are no known official plans or credible prospects for reopening Tokorcs Airfield. The demand for a dedicated agricultural airfield in the area has diminished significantly since its heyday. Given the proximity of other active airports (such as Szombathely - LHSY) and the high cost of recertifying and operating an airfield, a revival for public or commercial use is highly unlikely. Any future aviation activity would be limited to potential private recreational use (e.g., ultralights), which would depend entirely on the landowner's consent and regulatory approvals.
