Hódmezővásárhely Airport

Primarily economic reasons. The airfield was operated by a local sports flying club which, like many others in Hungary, was heavily subsidized by the state-controlled MHSZ (Magyar Honvédelmi Szövetség - Hungarian Defence Association). After the change of regime in 1989-1990 and the subsequent dissolution of the MHSZ system, the club lost its state funding and could not sustain the financial costs of operation and maintenance. This led to the cessation of activities and the eventual abandonment of the site.

The site is permanently closed and has been fully converted to agricultural use. Current satellite imagery of the coordinates shows the land is now comprised of cultivated fields. Faint, overgrown outlines of the former perpendicular grass runways are still slightly visible, but no airport infrastructure such as hangars, a clubhouse, or other buildings remains. The land is integrated into the surrounding farmland.

The Hódmezővásárhely Airport was a local sports airfield (sportrepülőtér) with two grass runways. It was the home of the 'Kovács-Kűry' flying club and served as a center for recreational aviation in the region. Its primary operations included general aviation with light aircraft, gliding, and parachuting. It represented a typical example of the numerous small airfields across Hungary that promoted aviation as a state-sponsored paramilitary sport during the socialist period.

There are zero prospects for reopening this specific historic airfield. The land has been completely repurposed for agriculture. Separately, local political figures have occasionally floated ambitious, long-term proposals to build a completely new, modern airport for Hódmezővásárhely at a different location, but these are highly speculative ideas with no concrete plans, funding, or timeline.
