Circa late 2000s. While the exact date of official closure is not documented, satellite imagery analysis shows the airport was falling into disuse by the mid-2000s. Major construction on the former runway, specifically the municipal stadium, began around 2009-2010, marking the definitive end of any potential aviation use.
Urban encroachment and land repurposing. The city of Santa Bárbara grew around the centrally located airfield. The land became more valuable for public and residential development than for an airport with limited traffic. The closure was a strategic decision to repurpose the area for community infrastructure, rather than being caused by a specific accident or military conversion.
The airport no longer exists. The site has been completely redeveloped and integrated into the urban fabric of Santa Bárbara. The land formerly occupied by the runway is now home to several key public facilities, including the Estadio Municipal Argelio Sabillón (municipal stadium), a large public park named 'Parque para una Vida Mejor', a youth outreach center, and a residential neighborhood aptly named 'Colonia Aeropuerto'.
For much of the 20th century, the Santa Bárbara Airport was the primary air link for the city and the surrounding department of Santa Bárbara. In a country with mountainous terrain and historically challenging road travel, the airport was a vital hub. It handled general aviation and likely small-scale domestic passenger and cargo flights operated by airlines like SAHSA on an intermittent basis. It was crucial for connecting the region to major cities for business, government affairs, and medical emergencies, primarily serving small propeller aircraft like the DC-3 in its early days and later Cessna models.
There are zero prospects for reopening the airport at its original location, as the site is fully occupied by permanent structures. While local business leaders and politicians have occasionally expressed a desire for a new airfield in a different location to boost tourism and economic development for the department, there are currently no concrete, funded, or official government plans to construct a replacement airport for Santa Bárbara.
