The airport did not have a formal, documented closure date. Analysis of historical satellite imagery indicates a gradual decline in use. The airstrip appeared maintained until the early 2010s. By 2018, a soccer pitch was constructed on the southern half of the runway, marking its definitive conversion to non-aviation use. Therefore, it effectively ceased operations as an airport between approximately 2015 and 2018.
Economic obsolescence and lack of demand. Amapala's role as Honduras's primary Pacific port diminished significantly with the development of the modern port of San Lorenzo on the mainland. As ferry services improved and the island's logistical importance waned, the need for a local airstrip for general aviation and charter flights decreased until it was no longer viable to maintain.
The site is no longer a functional airport. The southern portion of the former dirt/grass runway has been converted into a community soccer field, known locally as 'Cancha de Futbol de Amapala'. The remaining length of the airstrip is overgrown and used as an informal path, showing no signs of maintenance for aviation purposes.
Amapala Airport was a small, unpaved airstrip primarily serving general aviation. During its active years, it played a crucial role in connecting the island of Amapala (Isla del Tigre) with mainland Honduras, particularly the capital, Tegucigalpa. Operations consisted of private aircraft, air taxi services, and potentially government flights. It supported the local economy, which was historically centered around port activities and fishing, by providing rapid transport for personnel, officials, and high-value, low-volume cargo. The runway was approximately 850 meters (2,800 feet) long, suitable for a variety of single and light twin-engine propeller aircraft.
There are no specific, confirmed plans to reopen the original HN-0009 airstrip in its former capacity. However, the Honduran government is actively pursuing a major infrastructure project to build a new deep-water container port in Amapala and a bridge connecting the island to the mainland. This 'Megapuerto de Amapala' project, backed by international development banks, aims to create a major logistics and tourism hub in the Gulf of Fonseca. It is highly probable that the development of new or rehabilitated air infrastructure will be a component of this larger plan to support the expected increase in commercial and tourist traffic. Any future airport would likely involve a complete reconstruction and paving of the old site or the selection of a new location on the island.
