On or around February 10, 2021
The airstrip was intentionally disabled by the Honduran Armed Forces as part of a national security operation. It was identified as a clandestine landing area (Área Clandestina de Aterrizaje - ACA) used for illicit drug trafficking operations. The closure was a law enforcement action, not due to economic, safety, or standard operational reasons.
The site is completely inoperable. Following the February 2021 operation, the runway was destroyed by creating large craters and trenches across its entire length at regular intervals. This was done to permanently prevent any aircraft from landing or taking off. Satellite imagery clearly shows these obstructions. The surrounding land remains agricultural, dedicated to palm oil cultivation.
El Pentágono Airport was not a registered commercial or public airport. Its significance lies in its role as a key piece of infrastructure for transnational drug smuggling networks. The airstrip, approximately 1,200 meters long and located in a remote area surrounded by palm oil plantations, was strategically positioned to receive aircraft carrying narcotics from South America. Its well-maintained condition prior to its destruction indicates it was a significant and frequently used logistical point for illegal aerial operations.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening this airstrip. Given that its sole identified purpose was for criminal activity and it was deliberately destroyed by state authorities, it is extremely unlikely to ever be repaired or reopened for any legitimate aviation purpose.
