Massawa International Airport (IATA: MSW, ICAO: HHMS) serves Massawa, ER.
Massawa International Airport (IATA: MSW, ICAO: HHMS) is a military and public airport located in Massawa, Eritrea. It is considered one of Eritrea's major airports.
The airport was opened in 1935 by Italian authorities as "Aeroporto internazionale di Massaua" and was initially used for military aircraft during the Italian invasion of Ethiopia. Civilian postal service began in 1936. After World War II, it was rebuilt and enlarged.
Massawa International Airport has one asphalt runway, designated 07/25, measuring 3,500 meters (11,483 feet) in length. Its elevation is approximately 63 meters (206 feet) above mean sea level.
As of 2014, the airport accommodated only domestic flights due to companies lacking international licenses. Currently, there are no active commercial airlines operating from Massawa International Airport, though it is used by private jets and the Eritrean Air Force as one of its three airbases. The Eritrea Investment Centre has proposed a $60 million development project for the airport.
