Harar Meda Airport (QHR)

Harar Meda Airport (IATA: QHR, ICAO: HAHM) is a significant military airfield located in Bishoftu, also known as Debre Zeyit, Oromia, Ethiopia.

Type of Facility and Operations: Harar Meda Airport serves primarily as the main base for the Ethiopian Air Force (EtAF), hosting training facilities, operational squadrons, and maintenance operations for the country's aerial defense and combat capabilities. While its main function is military, it has historically accommodated civilian operations, especially when Bole Airport was undergoing construction or was unserviceable. In 2005, the airport served over 100,000 passengers, indicating its past role in civilian air travel.

Notable Features or History: Established in 1946, Harar Meda became a crucial development for the Ethiopian Air Force when its training center was relocated there from Lideta Airfield in Addis Ababa. The initial construction of the base involved both Ethiopian cadets and Swedish instructors. This relocation was vital for the post-World War II reconstruction and expansion of Ethiopia's air arm. The airport has a single asphalt runway, designated 16/34. Satellite imagery from 2012 shows various aircraft, including helicopters, fighters, and transport planes, based at the facility. More recent developments around 2021 include the expansion of drone facilities and ongoing rehabilitations of the base, such as runway extensions. Aircraft operated from the base include Antonov An-12 and An-32 transport planes, Mil Mi-24 Hind gunships, Mi-8 Hip variants, and Beechcraft King Air VIP and trainer aircraft.

Current Status: As of 2024, Harar Meda Airport continues to be the primary base for the Ethiopian Air Force, supporting approximately 90 active aircraft. It is considered a medium-sized airport.
