Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Circa 2011-2012. The airfield was permanently closed to make way for the construction of a solar power plant, which began around this time and was completed in 2013.

Reason for Closure

Land repurposing for economic and energy development. The site, a former military base, was selected for the construction of a large-scale photovoltaic (solar) park. The decision was made to convert the unused airfield into a renewable energy generation facility.

Current Status

The site is currently occupied by a large photovoltaic solar park. The entire length of the former runway, as well as adjacent taxiways and aprons, are now covered with thousands of solar panels. While the distinct outline of the airfield is still visible from satellite imagery, it is completely non-functional for any aviation purposes and is now an active power generation facility.

Historical Significance

Sarantapicho Airfield was a military airfield operated by the Hellenic Air Force (HAF). It was not a public or commercial airport. Its primary role was likely as a dispersal airfield or a forward operating base. These types of bases are strategically important as they allow military aircraft to be moved from their main operating bases during times of conflict or for specific training exercises, reducing vulnerability and increasing operational flexibility. It would have been capable of handling military fighter and transport aircraft during its active periods.

Reopening Prospects

There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The land has been permanently and comprehensively repurposed with the construction of the solar park, a significant and costly infrastructure investment. Reverting the site to an airfield would require the complete removal of the power plant, making it economically and practically infeasible.
