Military Conversion and Expansion. The airport was located at the site of the original Thule (Dundas) settlement, which was forcibly relocated by the United States and Danish governments to make way for the construction of the strategic Thule Air Base (now Pituffik Space Base) following a 1951 defense agreement. The small, local airstrip was supplanted by the much larger military airfield.
The site of the former Dundas Airport and the original Dundas village is now located within the high-security perimeter of Pituffik Space Base. The original runway no longer exists as an operational airfield. The area is a historical site within the base, sometimes referred to as 'Old Thule' or 'Dundas Village,' with some remaining building foundations and monuments. All regional and international air traffic is handled by the main runway and facilities of Pituffik Space Base (ICAO: BGTL).
Dundas Airport served the original Thule trading station, founded in 1910 by explorer Knud Rasmussen, and the associated Inuit settlement of Uummannaq (Dundas). It was a crucial logistical hub for the famous Thule Expeditions, which greatly advanced the exploration and ethnography of the Arctic. The airport, likely a very basic gravel or ice strip, handled small, often ski-equipped aircraft, providing a vital link for supplies, mail, and personnel to one of the world's most remote outposts. Its existence was tied to the scientific and cultural importance of the pre-military Thule settlement.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening Dundas Airport. Its original location is within an active, strategic military installation, and its function has been entirely superseded by the modern, heavy-lift-capable runway at Pituffik Space Base. Any future aviation development would focus on the existing infrastructure at BGTL, not the historical site.
