Circa late 2007
Infrastructure Replacement and Modernization. The heliport was closed upon the completion and opening of the new Paamiut Airport (IATA: JFR, ICAO: BGPT) at the same location. This was part of a larger, country-wide initiative by the Greenlandic government to improve domestic air transport by replacing helicopter-only heliports with modern airports featuring runways capable of handling STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) fixed-wing aircraft. This switch allowed for more reliable, higher-capacity, and economically efficient air services.
The site of the former heliport was completely redeveloped and is now occupied by the modern Paamiut Airport (BGPT). The old helipad, apron, and any associated small structures were demolished to make way for a 799-meter (2,621 ft) asphalt runway, a new apron, and a modern terminal building. The coordinates provided for the closed heliport are essentially the same as the location of the current, active airport.
Prior to 2007, the Paamiut Heliport was the town's sole and vital air link to the rest of Greenland and the world. As a remote coastal community, all air passenger traffic, mail, medical evacuations, and time-sensitive cargo relied on helicopter services. Operations were primarily handled by Grønlandsfly (now Air Greenland) using helicopters like the Sikorsky S-61N. These helicopters connected Paamiut with the primary air hub at Narsarsuaq Airport (UAK/BGBW) and other nearby settlements. The heliport was a critical piece of infrastructure that sustained the community for decades.
None. The heliport as an independent entity no longer exists. Its function has been permanently and completely superseded by the superior facilities of Paamiut Airport, which operates from the same site. There is no reason or plan to revert to a helicopter-only facility.
