🇬🇱 Summit Ice Landing Strip

The Summit Ice Landing Strip (GL-0006) is a dedicated ski airstrip, or snow runway, located at Summit Camp, also known as Summit Station, in the Northeast Greenland National Park, Greenland. This facility serves as a critical logistical hub for the year-round staffed research station, which is situated near the apex of the Greenland ice sheet at an elevation of approximately 3,216 meters (10,551 ft) above sea level.

The airstrip, identified by the ICAO reference GL-0006, is primarily used for the transport of personnel, cargo, and fuel to support scientific research activities at Summit Station. During summer, access is typically by LC-130 Hercules aircraft, which land on a groomed snow runway that is 4,572 by 60 meters (15,000 by 197 ft). Some sources also indicate a runway length of 16,800 feet and a width of 200 feet. Winter access is less frequent, utilizing smaller, ski-equipped aircraft such as Twin Otters. Historically, the airstrip was established in April 1989 to support the Greenland Ice Sheet Project Two (GISP2) deep ice coring efforts.
