La Gomera Airport (GMZ), situated in the municipality of Alajeró on the southern plateau of the island, serves as the primary aerial connection for La Gomera. While the island is heavily serviced by sea ferries, the airport plays a crucial role in providing rapid and direct access, linking it to the larger Canary Islands and facilitating travel for both residents and a growing number of tourists. Its operation is vital for reducing travel time and improving the island's accessibility.

Inaugurated on June 26, 1999, the airport is a relatively modern addition to the Canary Islands' infrastructure, established to overcome the island's historical reliance on maritime transport. Its construction marked a significant step in the development of La Gomera's tourism sector. The airport is located approximately 34 kilometers southwest of the island's capital, San Sebastián de La Gomera, a drive that typically takes 40-50 minutes via the TF-713 road. Travelers can reach the airport by rental car, taxi, or a public bus service (Line 7), which connects to key destinations like San Sebastián and Valle Gran Rey.

Operations at La Gomera Airport are exclusively domestic, with no international flights. Services are focused on inter-island connections, primarily to Tenerife North (TFN) and Gran Canaria (LPA). The main airline operating these routes is Binter Canarias, which utilizes turboprop aircraft like the ATR 72, suitable for the airport's runway length. Passenger volume is modest, reflecting the airport's small scale, but it consistently serves over 100,000 travelers annually.

The airport features a single, compact terminal building designed for efficiency. Facilities are basic yet sufficient for its traffic levels, including a check-in area, a departures lounge with a single gate, and a baggage reclaim hall. For passenger amenities, there is a small cafeteria that also functions as a shop for newspapers and souvenirs, as well as desks for several car rental agencies.

For travelers, arriving 60 minutes prior to a scheduled departure is generally adequate. Given the island’s limited public transport, pre-booking a rental car is highly recommended for exploring La Gomera's rugged terrain. Taxis are available but can be in high demand. Most visitors arrive via a connecting flight, and it is important to factor in sufficient time for transfers, especially if switching between Tenerife's two airports (Tenerife South and Tenerife North).
