Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

The airstrip ceased operations gradually between approximately 2015 and 2018. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows a clearly defined and maintained grass runway in 2012, which becomes progressively less distinct in subsequent years until it is fully integrated into the surrounding farmland by 2018.

Reason for Closure

As a small, private farm strip, no official reason for closure was publicly announced. The closure was almost certainly due to the cessation of private flying activities by the landowner. The land was subsequently returned to its primary purpose of agricultural use, a common fate for such private airfields.

Current Status

The site has been fully returned to agricultural use. Current satellite imagery shows the location of the former runway is now a cultivated crop field, completely indistinguishable from the adjacent farmland. All traces of aviation infrastructure, such as runway markings, a windsock, or dedicated hangars, have been removed.

Historical Significance

The facility, known locally as Killerby Airstrip, was a private, unlicensed airfield used for General Aviation (GA). It had no major historical significance in a national or military context. Its function was to serve the landowner and potentially a small number of visiting pilots with single-engine light aircraft (e.g., Cessna, Piper) who had obtained prior permission to land. The identifier 'GB-1154' is not an official ICAO code (which start with 'EG' in the UK) but is an unofficial designator used in flight simulator software and third-party aviation databases to identify small airfields without official codes.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airstrip. Given that the land has been fully reclaimed for agriculture for several years, any potential reopening would require significant effort and investment from the landowner and is considered highly unlikely.
