Circa early to mid-2000s. As a private, unofficial airstrip, there was no formal, officially recorded closure date. The landowner withdrew permission for its use during this period.
The airstrip was closed by the landowner of the Barrisdale Estate. The primary reasons were concerns over safety and liability. The strip itself was a notoriously difficult and hazardous tidal beach and rough grass field, suitable only for highly experienced pilots in STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) aircraft. The increasing risk of accidents and the associated legal liability for the estate led to the decision to prohibit landings.
The site is no longer an airstrip and is not maintained for aviation. The flat, grassy area that once served as the runway is now simply part of the natural landscape. The site is located directly beside the Barrisdale Bothy and campsite, which are managed by the estate and are very popular with hikers, climbers, and mountaineers exploring the remote Munros and wilderness of Knoydart. The land is used for camping and as a staging area for outdoor recreation.
Barrisdale Airstrip was a classic private 'bush strip' that provided vital air access to the extremely remote Barrisdale Estate on the Knoydart peninsula. Knoydart is often called 'Britain's last wilderness' as it is not connected to the national road network. The airstrip was the only way to reach the estate by air, bypassing the alternative of a long sea journey from Mallaig or a multi-day hike. It was well-known and revered among the UK's general aviation community for its stunning scenery and the immense challenge it presented, requiring precise piloting skills to navigate the mountainous terrain and land on the unforgiving, tidal surface.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Barrisdale Airstrip. The original safety and liability concerns that led to its closure remain. Given the current successful use of the area for low-impact tourism (hiking and camping), and the significant costs and legal hurdles involved in reinstating and certifying even a private airstrip, its reopening is considered highly improbable.
