Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Circa 2006-2007. The exact date is not publicly documented, but the closure coincided with a major shift in helicopter logistics for the Morecambe Bay gas fields.

Reason for Closure

Economic and logistical consolidation. The helipad's primary user, Hydrocarbon Resources Ltd. (a subsidiary of British Gas, later Centrica), ceased requiring the facility after the helicopter contract for servicing the Morecambe Bay gas fields was centralized at Blackpool Airport. This made the small, dedicated helipad at Sandscale Park redundant.

Current Status

The site is defunct and has been largely reclaimed by nature. Satellite imagery shows the faint outline of the concrete landing pad, which is now overgrown with grass and integrated into the surrounding pastureland. The land is part of the Sandscale Haws National Nature Reserve, an area of sand dunes and conservation importance managed by the National Trust.

Historical Significance

Sandscale Park Helipad was a private facility that served as a crucial logistical hub for the Morecambe Bay gas fields, one of the UK's most significant offshore energy assets. From the 1980s until its closure, it was used for crew changes, transporting personnel and essential light equipment between the mainland Rampside Gas Terminal and the numerous offshore platforms. Its strategic location minimized ground travel time for offshore workers.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the helipad. The original operational need has been eliminated by the long-term consolidation of services at other airports. Furthermore, its location within a protected National Nature Reserve makes obtaining planning permission for any future aviation activity extremely unlikely due to environmental regulations and potential disturbance to wildlife.
