Circa 2021-2022. The airstrip was permanently closed following the approval of a planning application in 2021 for a solar farm, with construction commencing thereafter.
Land Repurposing / Economic. The airfield was closed to allow for the construction of the Kitcombe Solar Farm. The owner of the land received planning permission from the East Hampshire District Council (planning reference: 21633/011) to erect a solar farm and battery storage facility directly on the land occupied by the runway.
The site of the former airstrip is now the Kitcombe Solar Farm. The entire length of the grass runway has been covered with rows of solar panels, completely removing its aviation function. The hangar located at the western end of the former strip appears to still be standing, but the operational airfield is permanently gone.
Kitcombe Airstrip was a private, unlicensed grass airfield that served the local general aviation community. It operated on a Prior Permission Required (PPR) basis and was primarily used by the owner and visiting light aircraft. The well-maintained grass runway was designated 09/27 and was approximately 700 meters (2,296 feet) in length. Its significance was purely local, providing a convenient and picturesque base for private recreational flying in Hampshire, rather than serving any commercial or military purpose.
None. The construction of a large, permanent solar farm infrastructure directly on the runway's footprint makes any prospect of reopening the airstrip infeasible. The land has been fundamentally and permanently repurposed for renewable energy generation.
