Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately between 2012 and 2015. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows a clearly defined and mown grass runway visible in 2009 and 2012, but by 2015, the land had been ploughed and fully returned to agricultural use, with no trace of the airstrip remaining.

Reason for Closure

Cessation of private operations. As a small, private farm strip, the closure was not due to major economic events, accidents, or military conversion. The most common reason for such closures is a private decision by the landowner, which could be due to retirement from flying, sale of the property, or the cost of maintenance. The land was subsequently reverted to its primary agricultural purpose.

Current Status

The site is now exclusively used for agriculture. The former runway and any associated aviation facilities have been removed, and the land has been fully integrated into the surrounding farmland. There are no physical remnants of the airstrip visible from the ground or current satellite imagery.

Historical Significance

Lingcroft was a private general aviation (GA) grass airstrip located at Lingcroft Farm. Its significance was purely local, serving as a base for the owner and potentially other local pilots for recreational flying. It handled light single-engine aircraft and possibly microlights. It had no scheduled commercial services or military history. The ICAO designator GB-0172 was an unofficial code used in navigation software and pilot communities to identify the location, which is common for small, private UK airfields.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Lingcroft Grass Airstrip. Given that the land has been fully reclaimed for farming, re-establishing an airfield at this location would be a new development, not a simple reopening. This makes any prospect of it returning to aviation use extremely unlikely.
