Planned military decommissioning. RAF Brenzett was a temporary Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) built specifically to support the D-Day landings (Operation Overlord). Its strategic purpose became redundant once Allied forces successfully established airfields in France following the invasion, making the forward bases in Kent obsolete. The land was then returned to its original agricultural use as intended.
The site has been completely returned to agricultural land, primarily used for farming and grazing. There are virtually no visible remnants of the runways or airfield infrastructure, as the temporary Sommerfeld Track runways were removed after its closure. A memorial stone has been erected on the site to commemorate the airfield and the personnel who served there. The nearby Brenzett Aeronautical Museum (also known as the Romney Marsh Wartime Collection) houses artifacts and displays dedicated to the airfield's history and the region's role during the war.
RAF Brenzett, also known as USAAF Station 438, was a significant temporary fighter airfield active during a critical phase of World War II. Constructed rapidly in late 1943 and opened in March 1944, its primary role was to house fighter and fighter-bomber squadrons providing air superiority and ground support for the Normandy landings. Initially, it hosted RAF squadrons, including No. 132 (Norwegian) Squadron, flying Supermarine Spitfires. From July 1944, it was used by the USAAF's 373rd Fighter Group flying P-47 Thunderbolts on missions over France. Its existence, though brief, was vital to the success of the Allied invasion of Europe.
None. The site was a temporary wartime construction that was decommissioned almost 80 years ago and has been fully reclaimed for agriculture. There are no plans, proposals, or any practical prospects for it to be reopened as an airfield.
