Relocation and replacement. The original airstrip, known as GB-0040, was a private, unlicensed grass strip on farmland. The owner, Chris Gurney, developed a new, purpose-built, and fully licensed aerodrome immediately to the west. Upon the opening of the new Cromer (Northrepps) Aerodrome (ICAO: EGSK) in 2008, operations were transferred, and the original GB-0040 strip was permanently closed. It was not closed for economic reasons or due to an accident, but as part of a planned upgrade and relocation.
The original site of the GB-0040 airstrip, at the specified coordinates, has been returned to its original use as agricultural land. It is no longer an active airfield and there are no visible remnants of its aviation past. All aviation activity is now handled by the adjacent Cromer (Northrepps) Aerodrome (EGSK), which is a fully operational and thriving airfield with multiple grass runways, hangars, a clubhouse, and fuel facilities.
The site designated GB-0040 was a private grass airstrip primarily used for general aviation, including light aircraft and microlights. Its main significance lies in its local reputation within the flying community. It was affectionately and humorously nicknamed 'Northrepps International Airport' by pilots, a joke stemming from its humble facilities which included a small shed for 'customs' and a windsock. The airfield was known for its friendly, informal atmosphere. It served as the precursor to the modern, licensed aerodrome that exists today, establishing Northrepps as a popular destination for private pilots visiting the North Norfolk coast.
None. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the original GB-0040 airstrip. Its function was directly and permanently superseded by the superior, licensed Cromer (Northrepps) Aerodrome (EGSK) located right next to it. The new facility fulfills and exceeds all the needs the original strip once served, making the old site redundant for aviation purposes.
