The airfield was closed as part of the UK's post-Cold War 'Options for Change' defence review, which involved significant restructuring and downsizing of the armed forces. The RAF Regiment Depot, the station's primary user, was relocated to RAF Honington as part of military consolidation.
The site has been completely redeveloped and is now an integral part of the Catterick Garrison, the largest British Army garrison in the world. The former airfield is now known as Marne Barracks and is occupied by British Army units, including the 5th Regiment Royal Artillery. The runways have been removed, and the land is used for military accommodation, training areas, and vehicle parks.
RAF Catterick was one of the UK's oldest airfields, opening in 1914 for the Royal Flying Corps. During World War I and II, it served as a major training base. In the Battle of Britain, it was a key Sector Station in No. 13 Group, Fighter Command, defending Northern England with squadrons flying Spitfires and Hurricanes. Post-war, it operated early jet fighters before becoming the home of the RAF Regiment Depot in 1946, serving as the main training center for the RAF's ground defence force until its closure.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening RAF Catterick as an airport. The site has been fully repurposed as Marne Barracks, a key component of the Catterick Garrison army base. Re-establishing an airfield would require the demolition of significant and active military infrastructure, making it practically impossible.
