Wagny Airport

While not officially documented, the closure was almost certainly for economic reasons. Remote airstrips like Wagny were typically built and maintained by private companies for specific industrial purposes, such as logging, mining, or oil exploration. The airport was likely abandoned when the associated project was completed, the resource was depleted, the operation became unprofitable, or the company's concession in the area expired.

The airport is closed and completely derelict. Current satellite imagery clearly shows the outline of the former runway, but it is entirely overgrown with grass, shrubs, and small trees. The site is abandoned and is being slowly reclaimed by the surrounding equatorial rainforest. It is completely unusable for any aviation purposes, and no infrastructure remains.

Wagny Airport was a private, utilitarian airstrip with no scheduled public flights. Its historical significance is tied to the industrial exploitation of Gabon's remote interior during the 20th century. It served as a critical logistical hub in a region with little to no road infrastructure, enabling the transport of personnel, vital supplies, and medical evacuations for a nearby work camp, most likely related to the forestry industry. Operations would have been limited to charter flights using light, rugged aircraft capable of Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL) on an unpaved runway, such as the de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter or Cessna Caravan.

There are no known or published plans to reopen Wagny Airport. The prospect of reopening is extremely low due to several factors: the remote location, the complete state of disrepair, and the high cost of clearing the land and rebuilding the runway. A reopening would only be considered if a significant new economic project, such as a major mine or a large-scale agricultural development, were to be established in the immediate vicinity, which is not currently planned.
