Circa 2006. The airfield was officially closed to public air traffic (CAP) by a decree on August 10, 2006. The effective closure corresponds with the departure of its primary user, the Aéro-Club de Soissons, around that time.
Primarily for economic and urban development reasons. The land occupied by the airfield was sold by its private owners to the local government authority (Communauté d'agglomération du Soissonnais). The authority purchased the land with the explicit goal of converting it into a commercial and industrial zone to attract businesses and stimulate the local economy. The departure of the Aéro-Club de Soissons was a direct result of this land sale and redevelopment plan.
The site has been completely redeveloped and is no longer an airfield. It is now the 'Parc d'Activités du Plateau de Cuffies-Soissons', a modern business and industrial park. The land where the runways, taxiways, and hangars once stood is now occupied by roads (such as Rue de l'Aérodrome), logistics warehouses, commercial buildings, and various company offices. While the name of the main road pays homage to its past, there are no remaining aviation facilities. Satellite imagery shows the complete transformation of the landscape from an open airfield to a developed commercial zone.
The Aérodrome de Soissons-Cuffies had significant historical importance, particularly during World War I.
- **World War I:** It was established as a military airfield and was heavily used by both the French Aéronautique Militaire and, later, the Air Service of the American Expeditionary Forces. Its strategic location near the front lines made it a key base for reconnaissance and fighter squadrons. Several notable French and American aces and squadrons operated from Soissons-Cuffies during the conflict.
- **Post-War and Civil Aviation:** After the war, the airfield transitioned to civilian use. It became the home of the 'Aéro-Club de Soissons', founded in the 1930s. For decades, it served as a hub for general aviation in the region. Operations included recreational flying, flight training for private pilots, and hosting local aviation events. It primarily featured a grass runway and basic hangar facilities typical of a local aeroclub.
There are zero prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been permanently and extensively repurposed for commercial and industrial use. The construction of permanent buildings, roads, and other infrastructure on the former airfield grounds makes any return to aviation activities impossible.
