Late 1998
The airport was closed due to replacement and relocation. A new, larger, and more modern airport, Angers-Loire Airport (IATA: ANE, ICAO: LFJR), was constructed in Marcé, approximately 25 km to the northeast. The Angers-Avrillé site was too small, had a relatively short runway, was becoming encircled by urban development, and lacked the modern infrastructure (like an Instrument Landing System - ILS) required to handle larger aircraft and future air traffic growth for the region. The transfer of all operations to the new facility made the old airfield redundant.
The site has been completely redeveloped and repurposed. The former airfield is now the location of a major urban development project on the 'Plateau de la Mayenne'. The most prominent feature is 'Terra Botanica', a large and popular botanical theme park that occupies a significant portion of the old airport grounds. The surrounding areas have been transformed into new residential neighborhoods, business parks, and public green spaces. While the infrastructure is gone, the faint outlines of the former runways and taxiways can still be discerned in some open fields from satellite imagery.
Aérodrome d'Angers-Avrillé held significant historical importance. Its origins date back to the dawn of aviation, around 1908, making it one of France's pioneering airfields. It served as a military base during both World War I and World War II, used successively by French, German, and Allied forces. After WWII, it became the primary airport for the city of Angers, handling scheduled commercial passenger flights from airlines such as Touraine Air Transport (TAT), as well as substantial general aviation, flight training (notably the Aéroclub de l'Ouest), and business aviation operations for over 50 years.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been permanently and irreversibly redeveloped for urban and recreational use. The region's aviation needs are fully met by the modern Angers-Loire Airport (LFJR), making a reopening of the Avrillé site both physically impossible and logistically unnecessary.
