The airfield was a private platform for ultralight aircraft (ULM). Its closure was not due to a major event like an accident or military conversion. It was most likely a private decision by the owner/operator, possibly related to the cessation of the local ULM club's activities, retirement, or the sale of the land for other purposes.
The site has been fully returned to agricultural use. Current satellite imagery shows that the land where the runways were located is now actively farmed as part of the surrounding fields. While the faint outlines of the former runways are still visible from the air, there are no remaining aviation facilities in operation. The buildings on site appear to be used for farming purposes.
Chailley Airfield, also known by its French ULM identifier LF8952, was a private airfield established in 1993. Its significance was entirely local and recreational. It served as a base for the 'Club ULM de Chailley' and the regional ultralight aviation community. The airfield featured two grass runways (03/21 at 300m and 13/31 at 280m) and handled exclusively ultralight aircraft for training and leisure flights. It held no commercial or military importance.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Chailley Airfield. The land is privately owned and has been repurposed for agriculture. Re-establishing an airfield would require a significant private investment and a complex re-certification process with the French Civil Aviation Authority (DGAC), which is considered highly unlikely.
