Circa 2019-2020
The closure was primarily due to administrative and land-use planning reasons. The airfield was a private ULM (ultralight) platform whose long-term future was uncertain. During the creation of a new inter-municipal local urban plan (PLUi - Plan Local d'Urbanisme intercommunal) for the 'Cœur du Jura' region around 2018-2020, the land was not zoned for continued aeronautical activity. This regulatory change effectively decommissioned the airfield, preventing any official flight operations from the site.
The physical remnants of the airfield are still visible on satellite imagery as of the early 2020s. A well-defined grass strip and a building corresponding to the former hangar still exist at the coordinates. However, the site is no longer an active or officially recognized airfield. The land is zoned for agricultural or natural use and is not maintained for aviation purposes. It is effectively a private field with a visible history.
Arbois Airfield was a private airfield dedicated to ultralight aviation (ULM - Ultra Léger Motorisé). It was known locally as the 'Plateforme ULM d'Arbois' or by its location name, 'En Chamblin'. It was never a commercial airport with scheduled flights (hence no IATA code) but served as a base for local recreational pilots. The code FR-1245 was an unofficial national identifier used in some aviation databases. The airfield consisted of a single grass runway (approximately 400-500 meters long) and at least one hangar. Its operations were limited to private, recreational flights, supporting the small general aviation community in the Arbois region.
None. The local urban plan (PLUi) legally prevents the site from being used as an airfield. Reopening would require a complex and highly unlikely reversal of this zoning decision by the local authorities. There are no known plans, projects, or public discussions aimed at reopening the Arbois Airfield.
