Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

June 14, 2010

Reason for Closure

The airport was closed and replaced by the new, larger Brive–Souillac Airport (IATA: BVE, ICAO: LFSL). The primary reasons for the replacement were the significant limitations of the Brive-La Roche site. Its runway was too short (approximately 1,430 meters) to accommodate larger, modern jet aircraft like the Boeing 737 or Airbus A320. Furthermore, the airport was completely encircled by urban and commercial development, making any runway extension or facility expansion impossible. The new airport was constructed to overcome these constraints, allowing for longer-haul flights, increased passenger capacity, and greater potential for economic and tourism development for the Corrèze region.

Current Status

The site of the former airport has been completely decommissioned and redeveloped. The runway, taxiways, and terminal buildings have been demolished. The land has been repurposed into a large business and commercial park known as the 'Zone d'Aménagement Concerté (ZAC) de Brive-Laroche'. The area now hosts a variety of businesses, retail outlets, offices, and light industrial facilities. The original airport infrastructure is no longer visible.

Historical Significance

Opened in 1960, the Aérodrome de Brive-La Roche (former ICAO: LFBV) served as the main air transport hub for Brive-la-Gaillarde and the Corrèze department for 50 years. It was a vital link for the region, primarily handling domestic commercial flights. Its most notable route was the regular service to Paris-Orly, which was operated for many years by airlines such as Airlinair (an Air France subsidiary) using ATR 42 and ATR 72 turboprop aircraft. Beyond commercial traffic, the airport was a significant center for general aviation, hosting the Aéroclub de Brive, and supporting business aviation for local industries. It played a crucial role in the economic life of the Brive basin before its operational limits necessitated its replacement.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero prospects for the airport to reopen. The site has been permanently and comprehensively redeveloped for commercial use. A modern and more capable replacement airport is fully operational nearby, fulfilling and exceeding the aviation needs that the old airport could no longer meet. Reopening is neither feasible nor planned.
