1979
The airfield was closed due to urban expansion and its replacement by a more modern facility. Its proximity to the growing city of Moulins and the development of an adjacent industrial zone made its location unsuitable for future aviation growth. Operations were relocated to the newly constructed Moulins-Montbeugny Airport (LFHY), which opened in 1979 and offered superior infrastructure, including a paved runway.
The site of the former airfield has been completely redeveloped into the 'Parc Logistique de Moulins Sud Allier', a large industrial and logistics park. The land is now occupied by commercial buildings, warehouses, and distribution centers, with a major facility for the logistics company Logilec being a prominent feature. All traces of the former runways and aviation infrastructure have been removed.
Established in 1931 by the Aéro-Club du Bourbonnais, the airfield, known locally as 'Champ de Gâteaux', was the original airport for the city of Moulins. It was a center for general aviation, primarily supporting flight training, recreational flying, and gliding activities. In 1939, at the start of World War II, it was requisitioned by the French Air Force. During the occupation of France, it was used by the German Luftwaffe. Following the war, it reverted to civilian control and resumed its role as a local aviation hub until its closure.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the Moulins Avermes Airfield. The site has been permanently and fully repurposed for industrial and commercial use, making a return to aviation activities infeasible.
