Approximately between 2012 and 2014. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the airfield was operational in 2012, but by 2014, construction had begun on the solar park that now occupies the site.
Economic reasons and land redevelopment. The land was repurposed for a more profitable venture: the development of a large-scale photovoltaic power station. The value of the land for renewable energy production surpassed its value as a small, private airfield.
The site of the former airfield is now completely occupied by the Millas Solar Park (Centrale photovoltaĂŻque de Millas), a large solar energy farm operated by an energy company. The distinct shape of the former runway and taxiways is now covered with thousands of solar panels. All aviation-related infrastructure has been removed, and the land is dedicated to industrial-scale renewable energy generation.
Mas Sarda Airfield, also known locally as Base ULM de Millas, was a private airfield primarily used for recreational aviation, specifically for ultralight aircraft (ULM - Ultra-Léger Motorisé). It served as a local hub for flying clubs and private pilots in the Pyrénées-Orientales department. The airfield consisted of a single unpaved runway and likely had basic facilities like small hangars. Its significance was not commercial or military, but rather as a key facility for the local general aviation community, fostering the hobby of recreational flying.
Zero. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The land has been permanently converted for industrial use with a significant, long-term capital investment in the solar farm infrastructure. Reverting the site to an airfield is not feasible.
