Approximately 2016. The airfield was closed to make way for a solar farm project, for which a public inquiry was held in late 2016. Satellite imagery confirms the runway was becoming overgrown by 2016 and construction was underway by 2018.
Economic reasons and land redevelopment. The private land was sold and repurposed for the construction of a large-scale photovoltaic solar farm, a more profitable use for the site.
The site is now the location of the 'Centrale photovoltaĂŻque de Bourdeilles', a ground-mounted solar power plant developed by the company Urbasolar. The southern half of the former runway is completely covered by rows of solar panels. The northern portion of the grass strip is still visible on satellite imagery but is unused and overgrown. The original airfield buildings have been removed.
The airfield, known locally as 'Base ULM de Bourdeilles' or 'Le Rigal', was a private airfield dedicated to general aviation, specifically for ultralight (ULM - Ultra Léger Motorisé) aircraft. It served as a local hub for recreational pilots in the Dordogne department. It consisted of a single grass runway (approximately 800 meters long) and a few small hangars. Its significance was purely local and recreational, with no scheduled commercial or military operations.
Effectively zero. The permanent installation of the solar farm infrastructure directly on the former runway and airfield grounds makes any prospect of reopening as an aviation facility infeasible.
