Circa 2006-2007
The heliport was closed due to obsolescence following the opening of the Gásadalstunnilin (Gásadalur Tunnel). The tunnel, which opened to vehicles in 2006, provided the first-ever reliable, all-weather road connection for the village. This eliminated the extreme isolation that had necessitated the government-subsidized helicopter service. With a permanent road link established, the expensive helicopter route was no longer economically viable or necessary for connecting the community.
The site is decommissioned and no longer operates as an official heliport. The physical helipad, a simple concrete or gravel landing area, may still be visible but is unmarked and unmaintained. The land has reverted to general use. Since the opening of the tunnel, Gásadalur has become a major tourist attraction, famous for the Múlafossur waterfall cascading into the ocean. The area around the former heliport is now easily accessible by car and is part of the landscape visited by tourists.
Gásadalur Heliport was a critical lifeline for one of the most isolated villages in the Faroe Islands. Before the tunnel, Gásadalur was only accessible by a perilous and strenuous hiking trail over a 400-meter-high mountain or by boat, which was often impossible due to rough seas. The heliport, served by Atlantic Airways' domestic helicopter service, was the primary means of transport for residents, mail, medical supplies, and essential goods. It played a crucial role in sustaining the village's small population and preventing its complete abandonment by connecting it to the main island of Vágar and the rest of the Faroese infrastructure.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Gásadalur Heliport for scheduled services. The road connection provided by the tunnel is a far more efficient, reliable, and cost-effective solution for the village's transportation needs. The original purpose of the heliport is now permanently fulfilled by road infrastructure. While the site could theoretically be used in an extreme emergency for a helicopter landing, it will not be reinstated as a regular, operational heliport.
