Approximately 1985-1986
Military consolidation and redundancy following the opening of the new, permanent, all-weather airbase, RAF Mount Pleasant. RAF Fitzroy was a temporary, post-conflict solution, and its capabilities were superseded by the far superior facilities at Mount Pleasant.
The site is completely disused and decommissioned. The runway surface and any temporary infrastructure have been removed or have deteriorated over time. The land has largely reverted to open grassland and is likely used for sheep grazing, which is typical for the surrounding area. The faint outline of the former runway is still visible on satellite imagery, but there are no remaining aviation facilities.
RAF Fitzroy was a temporary military airstrip constructed by the British Royal Engineers in the immediate aftermath of the 1982 Falklands War. Its creation was a critical logistical step to support the British garrison and begin the reconstruction of the islands. The airstrip was designed for STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) operations and primarily handled Royal Air Force C-130 Hercules transport aircraft, which were essential for moving troops, heavy equipment, and supplies between the UK (via Ascension Island) and around the Falklands. It also supported helicopter operations and aircraft from the Falkland Islands Government Air Service (FIGAS). The airfield's location is itself significant, being very close to Fitzroy Cove, the site of the Bluff Cove landings and the devastating Argentine air attack on the troopships RFA Sir Galahad and RFA Sir Tristram on June 8, 1982. The airstrip was a vital link in the islands' defense and supply chain until the purpose-built RAF Mount Pleasant became operational.
None. There are no known plans or prospects for reopening RAF Fitzroy. The Falkland Islands' aviation requirements are comprehensively served by the large military and international airport at RAF Mount Pleasant (MPN) and the smaller Stanley Airport (PSY), which handles internal and regional flights. There is no strategic, military, or economic need for a third airfield at the Fitzroy location.
