The exact date is not officially recorded, but the airport was closed in the mid-to-late 2000s, likely between 2005 and 2010. Its closure coincides with the major development of the Natadola Bay area, including the InterContinental Resort (opened 2009) and the championship golf course.
The closure was a direct result of land redevelopment for large-scale tourism. The private grass airstrip was made obsolete by, and its land was integrated into, the construction of the surrounding Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course and the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa. With the development of these major resorts, air access for the area was consolidated through the much larger Nadi International Airport (NFFN), making the small, private strip redundant and its land more valuable for resort use.
The site is currently an abandoned and overgrown runway. The distinct linear shape of the airstrip is still clearly visible on satellite imagery, located immediately east of the InterContinental resort and adjacent to the Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course. The land is not maintained for aviation and appears to be unused, fallow land within the greater Natadola Bay development property. There are no remaining airport facilities such as hangars, terminals, or markings.
Natadola Airport was a small, private, unpaved (grass) airstrip. It primarily served light aircraft for private owners, charter flights, and possibly scenic tours of Fiji's Coral Coast. Its main purpose was to provide direct air access to the Natadola Bay area for a small number of tourists, developers, and landowners before the construction of the major resorts and the improvement of road infrastructure. It was never a commercial airport and did not handle scheduled passenger services.
There are no known official plans or credible prospects for reopening Natadola Airport. The land is part of a prime tourism development area, making its value for potential resort expansion, real estate, or other amenities far higher than for a small airstrip. Furthermore, the proximity to luxury accommodations and a quiet golf course makes the noise and safety impact of an active airport undesirable. The region is well-served by Nadi International Airport, which is approximately a 45-60 minute drive away.
