Early 2000s
The closure was due to economic and land-use reasons. The municipality of Haapajärvi, which owned the land, decided to sell the airport area. This led to the cessation of aviation activities as the land was repurposed for other uses, primarily commercial development.
The airport is permanently closed and decommissioned. The land has been sold and redeveloped. While the faint outline of the former runway is still visible on satellite imagery, it is overgrown and unmaintained. A road now cuts across the southern portion of the old runway. A significant part of the former airport grounds and adjacent area is now used as a motorsports track (a 'Jokkisrata' for Finnish folk racing) and for commercial/industrial purposes, including the expansion of the Kärkkäinen department store's logistics center.
Haapajärvi Airport was a general aviation airfield constructed in the 1970s, largely through the volunteer work of the local community. Its primary operator was the Haapajärvi Flying Club (Haapajärven Ilmailukerho). The airport was a local hub for recreational aviation, supporting activities such as gliding, powered light aircraft flights, and model aircraft flying. It featured a single 800-meter gravel/sand runway (oriented approx. 15/33) and never served commercial or scheduled flights.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Haapajärvi Airport. The land is now privately owned and has been significantly altered and redeveloped for non-aviation purposes, making any potential restoration financially and logistically unfeasible.
