The airfield was closed after its landowner, the City of Tampere, decided not to renew the lease agreement with the operator, the Tampere Aviation Club (Tampereen Ilmailuyhdistys). The primary reasons for the non-renewal were persistent and long-standing complaints from local residents regarding aircraft noise and safety concerns. The city prioritized the interests and well-being of the growing residential community in the surrounding area over the continuation of aviation operations.
The site of the former Teisko Airfield has been completely repurposed. In 2022-2023, Tampere's energy utility, Tampereen Sähkölaitos, constructed a large-scale solar power plant on the land. This facility, known as the Velaatta solar power plant, covers the former runway and adjacent areas with thousands of solar panels, becoming one of the largest solar farms in Finland. The land is now used for renewable energy generation, and while the outline of the former runway may be faintly visible from the air, it is no longer suitable for any aviation use.
Teisko Airfield was a significant general aviation center for the Tampere region for over 30 years, from its opening in the early 1980s until its closure in 2014. It served as the primary base for the Tampere Aviation Club after general aviation activities ceased at the larger Tampere-Härmälä Airport. The airfield was crucial for recreational and sport aviation, handling a variety of operations including gliding, motor gliding, ultralight flying, and light aircraft training. It featured a single 800-meter grass and gravel runway (16/34) and was a vital hub for training new pilots and for the local aviation hobbyist community.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening Teisko Airfield. The closure was final, and the subsequent construction of a major, permanent infrastructure project (the solar power plant) on the site makes a return to aviation activities impossible. The land has been permanently repurposed for energy production.
