The exact date of official closure is not well-documented. However, the airport is believed to have fallen into disuse and was effectively abandoned following the end of apartheid in 1994. The decline was gradual, with official closure likely occurring in the mid-to-late 1990s as its strategic purpose ceased.
The closure was primarily due to a combination of strategic and economic factors. Its main purpose was military, serving as a forward airstrip for the South African Defence Force (SADF) near the Lesotho border. With the end of the Border War and the political transition in South Africa, the extensive network of small, strategic military airfields was no longer required. The subsequent restructuring of the military (into the SANDF) and shifting national priorities removed its reason for existence. Economically, there was insufficient civilian or commercial traffic to justify the maintenance costs for the local municipality, leading to its abandonment.
The airport is completely abandoned and derelict. Satellite imagery confirms the site is no longer functional as an airfield. The former gravel/dirt runway is heavily overgrown with grass and shrubs, and it is bisected by several informal dirt tracks. There are no visible signs of remaining airport infrastructure such as hangars, a terminal, or aviation fuel facilities. The land has reverted to open veld and appears to be used for informal grazing or as common land.
During the apartheid era, Wepener Airport was a significant strategic asset. Its location just 15 km from the Lesotho border made it a key logistical and surveillance hub for the SADF. Operations primarily included:
- **Military Logistics:** Transporting personnel and supplies with light transport aircraft like the Atlas C4M Kudu and Aermacchi AM.3 Bosbok.
- **Surveillance:** Acting as a base for reconnaissance flights along the sensitive border.
- **Support for Local Forces:** Providing air support and rapid deployment/extraction capabilities for the local Wepener Commando, a citizen-force unit.
- **Medical Evacuation (Casevac):** Serving as an evacuation point for injured soldiers or personnel.
Beyond its military role, it also handled a very limited amount of general aviation traffic, likely from local farmers and private pilots.
There are no known or published plans to reopen Wepener Airport, and the prospect is extremely unlikely. The reasons include:
- **Lack of Demand:** There is no significant economic or industrial activity in Wepener that would require air services.
- **Proximity to Major Airport:** Bram Fischer International Airport (FABL) in Bloemfontein is approximately 110 km away and serves the entire region's aviation needs.
- **Cost:** The infrastructure is non-existent. Re-establishing the airport would require a complete rebuild of the runway, taxiways, and facilities at a prohibitive cost.
- **No Strategic Need:** The original military purpose for the airfield no longer exists.
