Rand Airport (FAGM (QRA)) is a privately owned civil airport situated in Germiston, Johannesburg, South Africa.

Type of facility and operations: Rand Airport functions primarily as a general aviation facility. It hosts numerous flight schools, air charter operators, and aircraft maintenance organizations. Additionally, it serves as a base for helicopter emergency and related services, including Netcare and the SAPS Airwing. The airport also caters to private and commercial fixed-wing ventures.

Notable features or history: Construction of Rand Airport began in 1920, and it officially opened on December 21, 1931, as Johannesburg's first international airport. It served as the central hub for South African Airways (SAA) from 1935 until 1948, when SAA moved its headquarters due to runway length constraints. During World War II, Rand Airport played a vital role as a service base for the South African Air Force. In 1975, with 133,135 recorded aircraft movements, it was the busiest airport in the Southern Hemisphere. Today, a significant feature is the South African Airways Museum Society, which houses a collection of SAA memorabilia and static displays of classic aircraft, including two Boeing 747s donated by SAA. The airport also hosts an annual air show.

Current status: Rand Airport was privatized in 2000. It continues to operate as a busy hub for general aviation, pilot training, and various aviation-related businesses. The airport is also undergoing significant industrial development, transforming parts of its landholdings into a commercial precinct for businesses in Gauteng. It is a dynamic center for industrial and aviation development in Germiston.
