Approximately late 1990s (around 1998-2000). A specific official date is not widely documented, but the closure coincided with the relocation of its primary user, the Real Aeroclub de Córdoba, to the main Córdoba Airport (LEBA).
Urban encroachment and economic development. The airfield was progressively surrounded by the urban expansion of the city of Córdoba. The development of the northern part of the city, including the Plan Parcial O-4 which brought the Hipercor shopping center and new residential and industrial zones (Polígono Industrial de Chinales), made the airfield's operation untenable and unsafe. Its closure was a direct result of city planning and the land's increasing value for urban use rather than aviation.
The site is abandoned and in a state of dereliction. The faint outline of the runway is still visible on satellite imagery, but it is heavily deteriorated, overgrown with vegetation, and unusable. The land is effectively a brownfield site within the city limits. Part of the former airfield grounds has been integrated into the adjacent 'Parque de la Asomadilla', a large urban park. The remaining area is undeveloped land, awaiting future urban projects as designated by the city's master plan (PGOU).
San Jeronimo Airfield was the original airfield for Córdoba and served as the primary center for general aviation in the region for many decades. It was the historic home of the 'Real Aeroclub de Córdoba' (Royal Aeroclub of Córdoba). The airfield was a crucial site for flight training, recreational flying, gliding, and other private aviation activities. It played a significant role in fostering an aviation community in Córdoba, training numerous pilots before its operations were consolidated at the larger, more modern Córdoba Airport (LEBA).
None. There are zero prospects for the site to ever reopen as an airfield. Its location is now deep within the urban fabric of Córdoba, surrounded by commercial, residential, and recreational areas. Safety regulations, noise abatement requirements, and the high value of the land for urban development make its reactivation as an airport impossible. All future plans for the site are focused on non-aviation urban redevelopment.
