Circa 2009-2010. While an exact official date is not readily available, aviation community forums and historical satellite imagery indicate that flight operations ceased around this period, prior to the redevelopment of the land.
Land redevelopment for industrial use. The primary reason for the airport's closure was the sale and subsequent redevelopment of the land for the construction of a large-scale photovoltaic solar power plant. The location was chosen for its flat terrain and high sun exposure, making it ideal for a solar farm.
The site of the former aerodrome is now completely occupied by the 'Montes de Cierzo' solar power plant, a large-scale photovoltaic facility. The runway, taxiways, and other airfield infrastructure have been entirely removed and built over by thousands of solar panels and their associated access roads and equipment. The land is no longer recognizable as an airfield and is used exclusively for renewable energy generation.
Aerodromo de Monteplano was a private, recreational airfield primarily serving the general aviation community. It was the home base for the local flying club ('Club de Vuelo de Tafalla') and was mainly used for ultralight (ULM - Ultraligero Motorizado) aircraft, sport flying, and pilot training. The airfield featured an unpaved dirt/gravel runway (approximately 800 meters long) and basic facilities like a hangar. It served as an important social and operational hub for aviation enthusiasts in the Navarre region, occasionally hosting local fly-in events. It held no military or significant commercial significance.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Aerodromo de Monteplano. The complete and permanent redevelopment of the land into an industrial solar park makes reopening at the original location impossible. The significant investment in the energy infrastructure on the site precludes any future aviation use. There is no public information to suggest any active plans to relocate or re-establish the airfield or its flying club elsewhere.
