Røst Airport (RET)

Røst Airport (IATA: RET, ICAO: ENRS) is a regional airport serving the island municipality of Røst, located at the southern end of the Lofoten archipelago in Nordland county, Norway. The airport provides a critical year-round transportation link for the island's residents, supporting local industry, public services, and a tourism sector drawn to Røst's renowned bird colonies and rich fishing culture. Its function as a reliable connection to the mainland is essential for the remote community's viability. The airport is situated on the main island of Røstlandet, approximately one kilometer south of the primary village, making access straightforward for travelers.

Opened on June 1, 1986, Røst Airport was established as part of Norway’s extensive network of STOL (Short Take-off and Landing) airfields, a national project designed to improve connectivity for isolated coastal communities. Operations at the airport are exclusively domestic. The airline Widerøe is the sole scheduled operator, providing flights under a public service obligation (PSO) contract with the Norwegian government. The primary route connects Røst with Bodø Airport (BOO), which serves as the main hub for onward travel to Oslo and other destinations across Norway. A less frequent service also links Røst with Leknes. Passenger volume is modest, typically handling around 10,000 travelers annually.

The airport infrastructure consists of a single, functional terminal building designed for efficiency. Facilities for passengers are basic, reflecting the airport's small scale. Inside the terminal, travelers will find a check-in counter, a simple waiting area, and restrooms. There are no restaurants, cafes, or retail shops, so visitors are advised to bring their own refreshments. For ground transportation, the village center is within walking distance for many. Taxis are available but should be booked in advance to guarantee availability upon arrival. Due to the airport's compact size, check-in and security processes are quick; arriving 60 minutes before departure is generally sufficient. Travelers should monitor weather forecasts closely, as flights to and from Røst are susceptible to delays or cancellations caused by the region's challenging weather, particularly strong winds and fog.
