Hasvik Airport (HAA)

Hasvik Airport (IATA: HAA, ICAO: ENHK) is a small regional airport serving the municipality of Hasvik in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. Located on the western coast of the large island of Sørøya, the airport functions as a critical transportation link, connecting the remote island community to the Norwegian mainland. Its primary role is to provide essential air services for residents, support local industries such as fishing, and facilitate access for a small number of tourists. The airport is situated approximately one kilometer from the main village of Hasvik, making it easily accessible for the local population.

Opened in 1973, Hasvik Airport was established as part of a national program to build a network of short take-off and landing (STOL) airfields across rural Norway. The facility is owned and operated by the state-owned company Avinor. Its runway was later extended to accommodate larger STOL aircraft. The airport’s existence is fundamental to the viability of the island community, ensuring reliable year-round access for medical transport, commerce, and passenger travel, especially when sea routes are affected by harsh weather conditions typical of the Arctic region.

All scheduled flights from Hasvik are domestic and operated exclusively by the airline Widerøe. These routes are part of Norway's Public Service Obligation (PSO) program, which subsidizes flights to ensure connectivity for remote areas. Regular services connect Hasvik with the larger hubs of Tromsø (TOS) and Hammerfest (HFT), allowing passengers to transfer to other domestic and international destinations. The airport handles a modest volume of traffic, typically serving between 15,000 and 20,000 passengers annually.

The airport infrastructure consists of a single, small terminal building designed for functionality and efficiency. Facilities for travelers are very limited, reflecting the airport's size and operational scope. The terminal includes a check-in area, a small waiting lounge, and restroom facilities. There are no restaurants, cafes, or retail shops within the terminal, and travelers should not expect amenities such as airport lounges or extensive shopping.

For travelers, it is advisable to arrive approximately one hour before a scheduled departure. Transport to and from the airport is primarily by pre-booked taxi, as there is no scheduled bus service. Due to its close proximity to the village, walking is also a viable option for those without heavy luggage. Car rental services are limited and should be arranged well in advance of arrival. Given the potential for weather-related flight delays or cancellations in the region, passengers with onward connections from Tromsø or Hammerfest should plan for ample transfer time.
