The airport was officially closed in the early 2000s, with most sources indicating the final closure occurred around 2001-2002.
The primary reason for closure was urban encroachment. The rapid expansion of the Cairo metropolitan area, particularly the dense residential neighborhood of Imbaba, surrounded the airport. This created significant safety concerns due to low-flying aircraft over populated areas and limited potential for runway expansion. The high value of the land for urban redevelopment was also a major contributing factor, leading the government to repurpose the site for public and residential use.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped and no longer exists as an aviation facility. The land has been transformed into a large-scale urban project. This includes the 'Imbaba Cultural Park' (also referred to as a central park), new residential housing complexes, commercial areas, and significant infrastructure improvements, including new roads and axes to serve the densely populated area. The runways and airport infrastructure have been entirely removed.
For several decades after its establishment in the post-WWII era (late 1940s), Imbaba Airport (whose standard ICAO code was HEEM) was the primary hub for general aviation in Cairo. It was not a major commercial airport but served a crucial role for private aircraft, flight training schools (including the Egyptian Aviation Academy), gliding clubs, and air taxi services. It was the base of operations for many private pilots and aviation enthusiasts in Egypt before its activities were relocated, primarily to 6th of October Airport (HEOC).
There are zero prospects for reopening the airport. The closure is permanent and irreversible. The land has been completely and fundamentally repurposed for urban development, including a major public park, housing, and commercial centers. The original aviation infrastructure has been demolished, making any return to aviation use impossible.
Not in service for a while, closed forever!
