🇫🇮 Kitee Airport

Kitee Airport (EFIT/KTQ) is a public-use aerodrome situated in Kitee, North Karelia, Eastern Finland, approximately 10 km from the city center.

Type of Facility and Operations: The airport primarily serves general aviation, including private aircraft operations, recreational flying, flight training, and gliding activities. It does not handle scheduled commercial flights. Operations are conducted under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) as it is an uncontrolled aerodrome, meaning it lacks air traffic control services.

Notable Features or History: Kitee Airport features a single asphalt runway, designated 01/19, which measures 1,500 meters (4,921 feet) in length and 30 meters (98 feet) in width. The airfield is located at an elevation of 111 meters (364 feet) above mean sea level. It was established in the late 1980s, with initial operations commencing in 1989 with a gravel surface, which was later paved with asphalt in 1992. The facility is maintained by the local flying club, Keski-Karjalan Ilmailukerho ry (Central Karelia Aviation Club). It is equipped for night operations with runway lights, threshold lights, Precision Approach Path Indicators (PAPIs), taxiway lights, and apron lights.

Current Status: Kitee Airport is currently operational and reported to be in excellent condition. It continues to be a hub for general aviation and recreational flying. While fuel is available through club maintenance, the aerodrome has limited advanced facilities such as dedicated hangars for visiting aircraft, repair services, or passenger amenities like restaurants at the site, with such services typically found in Kitee town. The airport does not provide air traffic control, rescue and firefighting services, or instrument landing aids.
