Historically, the airfield's extensive facilities were destroyed in 1945. It was later revived in the 1950s as a central base for agricultural aviation in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and was subsequently converted into a transport airfield. The airfield holds significance due to its connection to aviation pioneer Otto Lilienthal, who was born in Anklam. An outdoor area of the nearby Otto Lilienthal Museum, the "Aeronauticon" educational and adventure garden, is located at the airfield.
