Approximately mid-to-late 2000s. Satellite imagery shows the runway was still intact in 2005 but was being converted into a road by 2010. The official closure was likely formalized by the municipal government in this period to allow for urban planning and redevelopment projects.
Urban redevelopment and infrastructure growth. As the city of Buena Fe expanded, the airport's land became critically valuable for urban use. The closure was driven by the need to build essential city infrastructure, including a major road and a central bus terminal, which were deemed more important than the small airstrip. Improved national highway networks also reduced the demand for local air travel.
The site has been completely and permanently redeveloped. The former runway has been paved over and converted into a wide, multi-lane city thoroughfare named 'Avenida 7 de Agosto,' which serves as a key part of the city's road network. A significant portion of the former airport land is now occupied by the city's main bus station, the 'Terminal Terrestre Sumpa - Buena Fe,' along with numerous commercial businesses, shops, and residential housing. No trace of the active airport remains.
Buena Fe Airport was a local airstrip that primarily supported the region's vital agricultural economy. Its main function was to serve as a base for agricultural aviation, such as crop-dusting planes (fumigación aérea) operating over the vast banana, cacao, and palm oil plantations in Los Ríos province. It also handled general aviation traffic, including private flights for plantation owners and business interests, and occasional air taxi or charter services connecting to larger cities like Guayaquil. It did not handle scheduled commercial passenger flights.
Zero. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been fully integrated into the urban fabric of Buena Fe, and its conversion into a major road and bus terminal is irreversible. Re-establishing an airport at this location is physically and logistically impossible.
