The airport was permanently closed in the mid-2010s. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the runway was still intact in early 2015, but construction for redevelopment had begun by late 2015 and was largely complete by 2017. The definitive closure occurred circa 2015.
The primary reason for closure was urban encroachment and land redevelopment. As the city of Cayambe grew, the land occupied by the airstrip became more valuable for public use. The local government repurposed the site to address the community's need for recreational space, converting it into a large public park.
The site of the former airport has been completely transformed into the 'Parque Yaznan,' a major public park and recreational complex for the city of Cayambe. The former runway area now contains multiple sports fields (soccer, volleyball), playgrounds, walking and cycling paths, green spaces, and other community facilities. All aviation-related infrastructure has been removed, and the land is now one of the main public spaces in the city.
Cayambe Airport was a small, local airstrip with a single unpaved (dirt/grass) runway. It was never a commercial airport and did not handle scheduled passenger or cargo flights. Its principal role was to support the region's vital agricultural economy, especially the world-renowned flower industry centered in Cayambe. Operations consisted almost exclusively of agricultural aviation (crop dusting and fumigation aircraft) and some limited general aviation for private pilots. Its significance was purely functional and local, serving as a critical piece of infrastructure for the area's plantations.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been permanently and fully redeveloped for public recreational use. Re-establishing an airport at this location is physically impossible without the complete demolition of the popular and well-established Parque Yaznan.
